Treble Choir to sing at the 11:00 a.m. service on Sunday, March 2 at Christ Church Cathedral.

Writer: Christopher LoChristopher Lo

For the Offertory Anthem at this service, the Treble Choir will sing the "Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110)" by  Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785).

Baldassare Galuppi (18 October 1706 – 3 January 1785) was a Venetian composer, born on the island of Burano in the Venetian Republic. He belonged to a generation of composers, including Johann Adolph Hasse, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, and C. P. E. Bach, whose works are emblematic of the prevailing galant music that developed in Europe throughout the 18th century. He achieved international success, spending periods of his career in Vienna, London and Saint Petersburg, but his main base remained Venice, where he held a succession of leading appointments.

One of Galuppi's many Dixit Dominus settings, this one for soprano and alto soloists with SSAA chorus was written for the Incurabili in 1774. The distribution of solo and ensemble parts through the seven movements is symmetrical, with choruses surrounding solo arias in the second and sixth movements and a central duet for both soloists. This is a typical example of Galuppi's late style, which fully embraces the Classical idiom.

This Sunday morning, should you be unable to be at Christ Church Cathedral, you can watch the Treble Choir at this link.
